Ecommerce Systems - so many to chose from!

The way the world does business is changing has changed. There can be no doubt that the world wide web has forever changed the landscape of how the world conducts its business.

The playing field is (somewhat) level, and barriers to entry for the aspiring internet entrepreneur are few. But the question arises for those contemplating the jump in to ecommerce, what platform should I use?

There are numerous different platforms available for use from free to expensive, from easy to set up to needing an expert to get you running. This is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list of ecommerce platforms at all!  I've picked a couple of the more popular tools that I'm familiar with and that I think might be beneficial for those of you who are trying to set out in to the ecommerce world.

Some are subscription based, some are open source, some are proprietary paid platforms.  If you're looking to launch a store you really can't go wrong with any of these.

Outlook for 2010

After many great learning experiences in 2009, my family and myself are hoping for a much better 2010! We believe that good things are in our future, and that the future is indeed very bright. Jim Rohn - a "business philosopher" - unfortunately passed away in early December.

How to chose your domain name

In a recent discussion I found myself in a debate on what's the best method to use when chosing your domain name for your new website.  What quickly became apparent is that there were two distinct issues being discussed - naming and branding your website, and search engine optimization (SEO).

So, as you think about chosing your domain I have a couple thoughts to offer:

Connections

As I watch on the sidelines of all that's going on at my alma mater as Coach Bowden retires I'm reminded of how important connections are.  Coach Bowden came to FSU by way of West Virginia, but had served earlier as an assistant at FSU before moving on as head coach at Samford.

So you need to get your website up, but you're budget for it is really small, and the thought of having someone else do it for you sounds too expensive.  Sometimes, that really isn't the case, but I understand budgetary issues - trust me, I do. What You See Is What You Get

First impressions mean everything.  You've been told that your whole life, heard about it when you've been preparing for a job interview, when you go to meet your future in-laws for the first time - "you never get a second chance to make a first impression". It's an important concept.  All things being equal, you want your initial encounter with someone to be memorable for all the right reasons.  You want the potential new boss to think highly of you, and your future father-in-law to think that you there must some redeeming quality about you.
